Run to the Rapids Rod Run returns this weekend for the 33rd annual event in downtown Park Rapids. The show opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13 and runs until noon with over 100 cars expected on display.

Run to the Rapids is sponsored by the Northern Knights Car Club and this year the show is a MSRA car voting event. Many of the classic cars and trucks will be in town for a pre-registration event Friday evening at the C’mon Inn.

The Northern Knights Car Club began in Park Rapids in the late 1970s with the meeting of three individuals, according to the club’s history. Jim Thorne, then the business manager for school district 309, was working on a 1934 Ford pickup. Mike Johnson, then the manager of the Park Rapids Pamida store, had a 1927 Model T Roadster. Bob Helgren, a teacher in the school district, was finishing a 1936 Ford Coupe.

Before long, a group was gathering weekly at the Dixie Drive-In to look at and “talk cars.”

After successful Rod Runs in Park Rapids, the group decided to organize a club on July 4, 1982 with 14 charter members. The membership has grown to more than 50 member (families) and covers a large area.

Run to the Rapids is put on each year with the help of business and individual sponsorships, entry fees and proceeds from t-shirt sales.
