Minnesota grocer Coborn's to add four Wisconsin stores

ST. CLOUD - Minnesota-based grocery store chain Coborn’s has acquired Marketplace Foods, a western-Wisconsin based grocery and liquor store chain.

Coborn’s also owns Cash Wise Foods and Save-A-Lot grocery stores. The move will add 400 employees and four Wisconsin stores in Hayward, Menomonie, Rice Lake and St. Croix Falls.Coborn’s currently employes 8,400 people and has 52 grocery stores in North Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. The current Marketplaces Foods stores will keep the name and retain the current staff. Marketplace Foods was founded in 1977 in Hayward, Wis.

St. Cloud-based Coborn’s currently has 106 retail locations including grocery, convenience, liquor, video and pharmacy stores. The company is building two new Cash Wise stores in Dickinson and West Fargo in North Dakota, set to open this summer.
