Sanford Health welcomes Chukwuma Ogugua, MD, to the pulmonology and sleep medicine teams


Sanford Health in Bemidji welcomes Chukwuma Ogugua, MD, to the pulmonology and sleep medicine teams at the Sanford Bemidji Main Clinic.

Dr. Ogugua obtained his two undergraduate degrees from the Government College Awka in Nigeria and the Colliery College Enugu in Nigeria. He later attended the Faculty of Health Sciences program at the University of Nigeria in Nigeria where Dr. Ogugua completed medical school receiving his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Post-graduation from medical school, Dr. Ogugua completed an internship at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, a residency in internal medicine with the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York City and two fellowships—one in pulmonary medicine at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York City and another in critical care medicine with the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He is also board certified in sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine.

Before joining Sanford Health, Dr. Ogugua gained valuable years of experience as an attending physician in Orangeburg, SC; Sylvia, NC; and Health Springs/Lancaster, SC, before becoming a pulmonary and sleep medicine physician in 2013 based in Paris, Ontario, Canada.

Specializing in pulmonary and sleep medicine, Dr. Ogugua will work with patients to help manage their conditions and find treatments that work the best for them. He treats asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic cough, COPD, cystic fibrosis, insomnia, loud snoring, pulmonary emphysema, shortness of breath, sleep apnea, sleep disorders and sleep walking.

“My goal is to understand patients’ perspective and treat the individual beyond expectation and deliver appropriate evidence-based care,” shared Dr. Ogugua.

Dr. Ogugua was living in Ontario with his family when he received information about Sanford Health from a recruiter. During his visit to Bemidji, he came to love the beauty of Bemidji, the friendly people and the layout of Sanford Health. In his free time, he indulges in reading his Bible, devotionals and also biographies. He likes playing soccer, spending quality time with his wife and four children, fishing, learning how to golf and going for walks.
