Lip balm from central Minnesota county goes to Iraq

OSAKIS, Minn. - U.S. soldiers serving overseas frequently find themselves working in all types of weather conditions. Spending so much time outdoors often wreaks havoc on their face and lips.

The Todd County Corn and Soybean Growers came to their rescue in March by donating soy-based lip balm to soldiers in Iraq.

“Our organization heard that soldiers serving overseas were in need of some lip balm,” said Todd County Corn and Soybean Growers President Tom Williamson of Osakis. “We knew we had exactly what they needed and thought donating this lip balm was a great way to help U.S. soldiers, while also promoting a soy product and the farmers that grow the soybeans.”

The donated lip balm, and many other lip balms, include soybean oil as an ingredient. Manufacturers of industrial and consumer products use soybean oil in a wide variety of products to increase product performance and replace petroleum and other volatile or hazardous ingredients.

Lip balm is widely used to seal moisture in lips and protect them from external exposure. Dry air, cold temperatures, and wind all have a drying effect on the skin.

The lip balm care packages were mailed last month from Long Prairie. The lip balm was expected to arrive in early April.

“Soybeans grown right here in Todd County are made into many different products we use in everyday life,” said Todd County Corn and Soybean Growers Treasurer Elisha Graves. “We hope the soldiers find the lip balm beneficial. Almost anyone that tries this type of lip balm falls in love with it. It’s become very popular!”
