Dogs have another good reason to wag their tails.

A private, members-only dog recreation area newly opened in Park Rapids. A ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday marked the grand opening of Tawny Dog Park, owned and operated by Angie Walthers.

The fenced, 9-acre park features agility training equipment, lure course, obedience classes, flyball, hiking trails, Canine Good Citizen program and skijoring/snowshoeing powered by dogs.

Walter thanked everyone for "making my dream come true through hard work or donations."

She created the park in memory of her dog, Tawny, who passed away in January 2015 from bone cancer. Walthers said she hopes the dog park will bring joy and memories to area dog owners.

To become a member, dogs must pass a temperament test and have up-to-date vaccination records. There is a one-time registration fee and a variety of membership types — from day pass to monthly to yearly.

Tawny Dog Park adjoins Angie's Groom 'N' Board on Western Avenue. Call 732-9862 for more information.
