Boys Hockey: Detroit Lakes defeats Panthers
The Lakers scored two power-play goals in the third period to seal a 4-1 victory.
Detroit Lakes took advantage of a five-minute major penalty to score a pair of power-play goals in the third period to seal a 4-1 Mid-State Conference and Section 8A win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team at Detroit Lakes’ Kent Freeman Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Spencer Bergman’s breakaway goal with 3:57 to play in the first period and Jordan Fields’ goal with 2:08 to play in the second period gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Detroit Lakes outshot the Panthers 15-8 in the opening period and 16-8 in the second period.
The Panthers cut the gap to 2-1 when Joey Hillikka assisted on Jaxson Lund’s goal 1:07 into the third period. Detroit Lakes iced the win when Cole Larson and Beau Boehne scored power-play goals in a span of 1:29. Park Rapids had three power-play chances in the final 6:52, but couldn’t score as the Lakers held an 11-4 edge in shots in the final period.
Park Rapids goalie Sawyer Torkelson made 38 saves as the Panthers fell to 1-1 in the conference, 0-2 in the section and 2-2 overall. Detroit Lakes improved to 2-1 against section teams and 2-2 overall in its conference opener.
