Boys Basketball: Tigers rout Verndale in section game

Nevis hit 13 3-pointers to spark an 83-39 victory at the Tiger Arena.

Making 13 3-pointers, including eight in the first half, powered the Nevis boys basketball team to an 83-39 victory over Verndale at the Tiger Arena in a game between Section 5A teams on Monday, Dec. 6.

Three-pointers by Ty Warrington, Eddie Kramer and Joe Houchin along with a three-point play by Cain Mitchell and a tip-in by Kramer gave the Tigers a 16-8 advantage with 12:57 to play in the first half. A pair of 3-pointers by Warrington along with a 3-pointer and a basket off a rebound by Mitchell made it 27-12 at the 9:33 mark before two jumpers by Kramer and a jumper by JohnPaul Benson pushed the lead to 34-16 with 5:35 left. A 3-pointer and two jumpers by Mitchell and a 3-pointer by Benson provided a 44-18 advantage at the half. The Tigers went 8 for 15 on 3-point attempts in the opening half.

Two layups by Benson, layups by Mitchell and Warrington, a jumper by Kramer, and a basket off a rebound by Mitchell extended the Tigers’ lead to 58-23 before 3-pointers by Kramer and Mitchell made it 64-26 with 12:15 to go. A jumper by Devan Lindow, a layup off a steal by Warrington, jumpers by Kramer and Warrington, and a 3-pointer by Spencer Lindow gave Nevis a 75-34 cushion with 5:37 remaining. Three-pointers by Ethan Lewis and Tyler Lindow and a jumper by Austin Ahrendt concluded the scoring for Nevis.

Mitchell (22), Kramer (18) and Warrington (17) scored in double figures as the Tigers had 11 players contribute points. Mitchell pulled down nine rebounds, Warrington dished out eight assists and Benson had six rebounds. Houchin had four rebounds and four assists and joined Benson and Tyler Lindow with two steals as Nevis improved to 2-0 on the season.

Brandon Greenwaldt scored 13 points to lead the Pirates in their season opener.

“We jumped out to an early lead as we shot the ball pretty well against their zone defense,” said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer. “This was a nice section win for us as Verndale will be in the hunt come playoff time in March.”
