Two wins in the regular-season finale at Fosston Tuesday night locked up the No. 6 seed in the Section 8A tournament for the Park Rapids wrestling team. The Panthers defeated Fosston/Bagley 40-28 and Red Lake County Central 66-18 to end the regular season with a 10-12 record in dual meets. Park Rapids opens the section tournament today (Saturday) with a quarterfinal match against No. 3 Crookston at 12:30 at Thief River Falls. Three-pointers by Brandon Tharp and Brandon Zimmer at the start of the second half gave Walker-Hackensack-Akeley the lead for good as the Wolves defeated the Park Rapids boys basketball team 66-56 Thursday night at the Area High School gym. The Panthers played a solid first half in settling for a 31-31 tie at the break. Layups by Paul Dirks and Dillon Theis, two free throws by Roth Mattson and a jumper by Max Brown gave the Panthers an 8-6 lead with 14:09 to play in the first half. Park Rapids' Summer Ellefson finished 24th in her fourth trip to the state Nordic ski meet. Ellefson, a sophomore who competes for the Northwest Independent School, clocked a pursuit time of 36 minutes, 21 seconds at Giants Ridge in Biwabik Thursday for her third consecutive top-25 showing at state. Ellefson finished 20th out of 120 skiers in the freestyle portion with a time of 18:14 and was 28th in the classic portion with a time of 18:07. In her three previous state trips, Ellefson finished 10th last season, 15th as an eighth grader and 83rd as a seventh grader.
Park Rapids' Jared Storseth and Kevin Merfeld earned all-conference honors with winning performances at Friday night's Mid-State Conference boys swimming and diving meet at the Area High School pool. Storseth won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.48 seconds while Merfeld followed with a winning time of 5:36.19 in the 500 freestyle as the Panthers finished third with 379 points.
Alyssa Carlson's 3-pointer with 14 seconds to play in the second overtime lifted the Park Rapids girls basketball team to a 74-70 victory over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Thursday night at the Area High School gym. The win snapped a 16-game losing streak for the Panthers in a game that saw eight ties and 19 lead changes. "The girls could have given up, but they haven't. They've been coming to practice and they've been working hard," said Park Rapids head coach John Schumacher, whose team improved to 2-16 on the season.
A three-goal third period lifted the Park Rapids-Menahga boys hockey team to a 5-3 win at Detroit Lakes Thursday night and to the Mid-State Conference title. Both teams entered this game with 6-1 records in conference play. The Panthers were able to avenge a 5-4 overtime loss to Detroit Lakes on Dec. 15 by scoring three times in the final 4:14 of the game to win the conference title outright. Dan Ricke tied the game at 3-3 at the 12:46 mark before Sam Coborn scored the game-winner off the ensuing faceoff.
Runner-up efforts by Jared Storseth, Sam Goebel and Ryan McBrady led the Park Rapids boys swimming team to third place at last Saturday's Park Rapids Invitational. The 400-yard freestyle relay team also took second as the Panthers compiled 503.50 points to trail Perham's 577 and Detroit Lakes' 572.50 in this four-team meet. Storseth clocked a 2:25.88 to finish second in the 200 individual medley, Goebel clocked a 5:44.22 to finish second in the 500 freestyle and McBrady clocked a 1:11.14 to finish second in the 100 breaststroke to lead the Panthers.
Jared Nash captured the title at 171 pounds in leading the Park Rapids wrestling team to sixth place at last Saturday's Northwest Invitational at Fertile. Nash pinned Mahnomen-Waubun's Keith Warren and Thief River Falls' Craig Williams to reach the finals before defeating Roseau's Travis Pederson 14-5 in the championship match. Two other Park Rapids wrestlers advanced to the finals at their weight classes. Zach Steffen defeated Mahnomen-Waubun's August Short 16-7 and Roseau's Braden Stroot 7-6 to reach the title match at 140.
Four Park Rapids gymnasts received all-conference honors as Park Rapids placed third at last Saturday's Mid-State Conference meet at the Area High School gym. Kyja Penning and Emily Klingenberg received all-conference honors while Kirsten Erickson and Jessi Andersen earned all-conference honorable mention honors for their performances during Mid-State meets this season. During Saturday's meet, the Panthers compiled 117.95 points to trail Perham's 152.175 points and Detroit Lakes' school record of 149.325 points. It was Perham's eighth conference title in a row.
