Chris Shaw prevailed at No. 2 singles while Steven Osterman and Calvin Bateman won in three sets at No. 2 doubles to lift the Panthers to a 4-3 win over Perham at the Depot Courts. Ian Johnson and Bailey Mueller carded identical rounds of 179 to lead the Park Rapids boys golf team to a 746 and 14th place at the Pequot Lakes Invitational. Johnson and Mueller shot 93s during Tuesday's round at The Pines and followed with 86s during Wednesday's round at The Preserve in this two-day, 17-team meet. A 17-hit attack and four innings of near-perfect relief pitching by Bailee Jerger sparked the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team to a come-from-behind 11-10 extra-inning victory at Menahga Thursday. The Panthers faced a 10-3 deficit before scoring five times in the fifth and twice in the sixth to tie the game before winning it in the eighth. Over the last two seasons, it was tough for the members of the Park Rapids boys swimming team to see the progress they made. That changed this season. Two seasons ago, the Panthers went 0-6 in dual meets, finished third at the Mid-State Conference meet, finished last out of 12 teams at the Section 3A meet with 56 points and qualified one swimmer for the state meet. Even though the Park Rapids boys golf team returns a young lineup, head coach Jim Weinzierl is optimistic the Panthers can contend for a spot in the Mid-Minnesota Conference Championship and Section 8AA tournament. A year ago, the Panthers shot a season-best 344 at Bears Den and ended the season by shooting a 366 for sixth place at the Mid-State Conference tournament and a 358 for seventh place at the North Section 8AA tournament. Having a pair of Section 8AA qualifiers returning has Walt Harrison expecting another solid season from the Park Rapids girls golf team this spring. Last year, the Panthers shot below 400 six times, highlighted by a 375 at Headwaters Country Club and a 391 for fourth place at the North Section 8AA meet. The Park Rapids girls track and field team finished in the top 3 spots for the third time in three indoor meets at Bemidji State University Friday. Led by Grace Bateman's first-place finish in the pole vault and runner-up finish in the 200-meter hurdles, the Panthers compiled 78 points to place third at the Beaver Relays. Bemidji took first with 169.50 points while Bagley/Fosston was second with 81.50 points in this 15-team indoor meet at BSU.
