STILLWATER, Minn. -- Although some have watched the rising waters of the St. Croix River with growing concern in recent days, it’s looking as if Stillwater will be safe from flooding in the near future. With a dam breaking upriver and torrential rain, the swollen St. Croix has steadily encroached on Stillwater’s flood stage for several days. But National Weather Service forecasters believe that it will peak soon.
Crisis Connection, Minnesota’s telephone crisis hotline, will shut down June 30 after a bill that included its continued funding was vetoed last month. Canvas Health, the Oakdale-based nonprofit agency that operates the hotline, requested nearly $1 million from the state this year for long-term sustainable funding, but that request was a casualty of Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton’s veto of a state spending bill after disagreements with Republican lawmakers.
ST. PAUL -- Friends and family of Jodi Huisentruit are hoping a new billboard campaign will solve the mystery of the morning news anchor’s 1995 disappearance in Mason City, Iowa. Four billboards featuring a photo of Huisentruit and the message “Somebody knows something …is it YOU?” are being installed around the city to mark her 50th birthday on June 5; the first one went up on Wednesday.
ST. PAUL -- A ’90s vocal group, classic R&B horn band, two regional favorites and a former Journey vocalist are among the artists set to play the Minnesota State Fair’s largest free stage. The newly announced lineup for evening shows at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell includes Tower of Power (Aug. 23-24), BoDeans (Aug. 25-26), En Vogue (Aug. 27-28), Clay Walker (Aug. 29-30), Steve Augeri (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) and Har Mar Superstar (Sept. 2-3).
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas -- Minnesota fugitive Lois Riess was apprehended Thursday night in south Texas, ending a nationwide manhunt for the woman suspected of killing her husband and an innocent bystander in Florida. Officers with the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Riess at about 8:25 p.m.
EAGAN, Minn. --Sun Country Airlines says it will cover some additional costs for travelers stranded in Mexico after the airline canceled flights due to a weekend snowstorm battering Minnesota. An estimated 250 people were stuck when Eagan-based Sun Country couldn’t provide planes because the airline was ending seasonal service on Saturday. Passengers who managed to rebook on other airlines complained of spending hundreds or thousands of dollars more to get home from Los Cabos and Mazatlan.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota on Wednesday collected on her Vikings-Saints wager with U.S. Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana. After reliving Stefon Diggs' game-winning touchdown catch -- Klobuchar enthusiastically, Kennedy not so much -- Kennedy offered Klobuchar a king cake -- a traditional Mardi Gras cake, according to a video of the exchange sent out by her office.
FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn.—A 19-year-old University of Minnesota student from St. Peter on Wednesday was crowned the 64th Princess Kay of the Milky Way. The Midwest Dairy Association selected Emily Annexstad, representing Nicollet County, from a field of 12 county dairy princesses during an Aug. 23 ceremony at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Annexstad will serve as the official goodwill ambassador for more than 3,000 dairy farm families in Minnesota.
