By Shannon Geisen email@example.com Menahga Mayor Patrick Foss recalled when the city council set a high levy several years ago. “This year’s levy won’t be any sweeter,” he said. The council set its preliminary payable 2016 levy at $489,035. The 2015 final levy was $414,306. The proposed general fund levy remains the same as last year at $304,514. But a $69,898 hike in additional debt levies is due to a shortfall in the city’s debt service fund. By the end of December, the debt service fund balance is projected to be $286,346.

A Menahga resident recently received an “official check” for $4,736.00 this week. It contained the promise of an eventual $250,000 payment, so right away, the scam was trying to keep victims hooked. The check was the first step to receive a total payout of $245,364 from Onward Assurance Financial Service’s “Division of Unclaimed Funds” in Toronto.
Friday night at the American Legion Club in Park Rapids a fundraising dinner will be held for Oakley, the Sheriff's Department canine. The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. with dinner service starting at 4:40 p.m. The Sheriff's Deopartment is raising funds for as bulletproof vest for the dog.
On Saturday, September 5, 2015, a citizen spotted clothing floating near the shoreline of the Mississippi River and contacted law enforcement requesting assistance. Deputies drove to the scene identified by the complainant and there they located a deceased male in the Mississippi River between Lake Irvine and Lake Bemidji about ten feet from shore floating face down in the weeds. The “Warrior Expeditions” program, initiated in 2012 by former Marine Sean Gobin of Charlottesville, Va., is designed to support combat veterans transitioning from their military service by thru-hiking America’s National Scenic Trails. BY Sarah smith email@example.com A suspected shoplifting incident late Monday afternoon led to a high speed pursuit out of Park Rapids, ending near Nevis with the arrest of a man and woman. The chase of the stolen car allegedly topped speeds of 100 mph. A man and woman were taken into custody on County Road 2 north of Nevis when the chase came to an end.
