More than 100 volunteers made Thanksgiving special for 600 diners Thursday in Park Rapids. The annual community Thank Meal at Riverside United Methodist Church transformed the facility into a hub of activity all week. Volunteers cooked 35 turkeys. "We had 70 to 80 pies but they're still coming in the door," said volunteer Barbara Southward at noon Thursday. A consortium of community churches has put on the meal for 28 years. Two-dozen delivery drivers transported meals to those who couldn't or wouldn't brave the cold and snow to come.

Last Thursday Alan Saar kept his eyes glued to the stock ticker running across the screen of his laptop computer. Numerous accidents were reported around the area. Hubbard County crews were out sanding and salting roadways early Sunday. The area is under a winter weather advisory. "The causative event is freezing drizzle," said National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Barrett. "But that can be worse than a couple inches of snow." Barrett said the conditions should subside by early Sunday afternoon, with about another inch of precipitatio

When Jennifer Keranen needs to meet with a client, she has to go on a treasure hunt to find a vacant office first. Or a closet where she can assure that client confidential communications. Trouble is, the closets are being converted to office space. The conference room - the small one - was recently converted into offices. Keranen, a Hubbard County social worker, has four office mates within feet of her. She uses a drawstring curtain to cover up confidential client files when a non-staff member enters the office.
