The Park Rapids High School drama department took first place at the Minnesota State High School League 24A Sub-section One-Act Play competition Jan 23. Their performance of “4 A.M.,” written by Jonathan Dorf, earned them a trip to the Section 6A contest in Wadena Saturday, Jan. 30. “Park Rapids had their best performance to date on Saturday,” said Drama Director Juliann Kjenaas. Park Rapids has placed first at sub-sections since 2009. The public is invited to attend an open dress rehearsal Thursday, Jan. 28, held at the high school auditorium at 7 p.m.
Residents and business owners in the Park Rapids area are encouraged to attend an open house on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 3-7 p.m., to learn more about the potential intersection reconstruction and corridor access modifications on Highway 71 from Hubbard County Road 15 to Eighth Street in Park Rapids. The meeting will be held in room 324 at the Hubbard County Courthouse in Park Rapids. Alliant Consulting Inc. is currently conducting an Intersection Control Evaluation to analyze the intersection and access management along the corridor.
Two people were injured when a car and a minivan sideswiped each other on Highway 34 Thursday afternoon in Becker County. The driver of the 2002 Ford Focus, John J. Johnson, 45, of Fargo, was taken to Essentia Health in Park Rapids with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the State Patrol.A passenger in the 1998 Dodge Caravan, Simon D. Rock, 67, of Grand Ronde, Ore., was also taken to Essentia Health in Park Rapids with non-life-threatening injuries.
A Wadena teen died in a collision just north of the Wadena city limits Friday night. The Wadena County Sheriff’s Office reported Samuel Scott Kelderman, 17, of Wadena, was traveling southbound in a 2006 Chevy Impala on Leaf River Road when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a 2011 Ford F150 driven by Gregory Emil Marjamaa, 40, of Menahga. Kelderman’s vehicle came to a rest in the east ditch. Kelderman was transported to Tri-County Hospital where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash, the sheriff’s office reported.

A 16-year-old Bemidji girl and a 16-year-old Laporte boy were killed when their vehicle collided with a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 71 south of Bemidji Wednesday. Emergency personnel responded to the crash at 6:23 p.m. The Minnesota State Patrol identified the two teens killed in the accident as Jacob R. Bruns, 16, of Laporte, and Kiara M. Renollette, 16, of Bemidji.
Mike Cameron of Nevis is set up and waiting for a bite at the start of the Menahga Family Fishing Derby held Saturday on Spirit Lake. The temperature was well below zero when the tournament began at noon as anglers of all ages braved the frigid weather to participate in the annual event. “I’m looking to catch a fish. That would be real special,” Cameron said. “As long as I catch something I’m a happy guy.” And the weather? “I don’t think it’s that bad.
