Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie reports that Sheldon James Armstrong III, age 22, of Cass Lake and Travis Richard Paquette, age 18, of Bemidji were arraigned in Cass County District Court on August 4th 2014, for charges of attempted murder in the first degree, kidnapping, second degree assault and theft of a motor vehicle. According to the criminal complaint, Cass County Deputies were dispatched to a residence near Cass Lake at approximately 2:45 a.m.

Minnesota shooting clubs that would like to develop or rehabilitate trap-shooting facilities open for public use can apply for funds through a new Department of Natural Resources grant program. The Minnesota Legislature authorized more than $2 million for matching grants to recreational shooting clubs for developing or rehabilitating trap shooting sports facilities for public use, with an emphasis on enhancing youth participation opportunities.
A call out on social media is bringing a California band to a Park Rapids resort to perform a concert. Joe Scharber, from Sleeping Fawn Resort and Campground, said he started following the band “The Podunk Poets” on Facebook for at least a year. The band, created in 2011, is a classic country-inspired, duet-fronted band from Los Angeles.
Tax preparer Jim Nelson recently returned to his home in Park Rapids after being in the hospital in Fargo, N.D. to letters and messages of condolence. To his surprise, some friends and acquaintances read an obituary in the Enterprise for a different Jim Nelson and thought it was him. He is recovering from surgery at home but wants everyone to know he is fine.

Ground-applied herbicide vegetation control on 339 acres of land in the Park Rapids and Nimrod areas have begun and will continue through approximately Aug. 15 as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources prepares sites for tree planting. Signs will be posted on all herbicide treatment sites. “Herbicides are applied to state land to help establish new forests,” explained Mike Lichter, DNR area program forester, Park Rapids.
