Wednesday, Aug. 20 Meals on Wheels will have a volunteer appreciation picnic from 4:30-6:30 p.m. today, Aug. 20 at the Heartland Park picnic shelter. Please join and bring a friend. Motorists on Highway 34 east of Detroit Lakes will encounter lane closures and possible delays when work on a passing lane and intersection safety project begins Monday, Aug. 25. Crews will construct an eastbound passing lane near Becker County Road 25 and make safety modifications to the intersection of Highway 34 and Becker County Road 29. Flaggers will allow one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone. Drivers must obey the flagger, be prepared to stop and follow the pilot car through the work zone.
The filing period for municipal and school district elections closed last week, with a few new candidates throwing their hats in the ring. Those who have filed include: * In Park Rapids, incumbent Pat Mikesh has filed for mayor, along with Pam Hauber. Incumbents Paul Utke and Erika Randall have filed for two four-year terms. * Incumbent Park Rapids Area School Board members Dennis Dodge and Steph Carlson have filed, along with newcomer Clayton Hoyt. They are running for three four-year terms.
An Ogema woman has been charged with second degree murder and first degree manslaughter in the August 15 death of Richard Alan Baity of Ogema.
