A majority of 24 employees of Hubbard County voted to form a union represented by the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 65 late last month. The State of Minnesota’s Bureau of Mediation Services conducted a mail-ballot election and certified election results on July 22, 2014. Employees participating in this election, who work in the Hubbard County Courthouse and Sheriff’s Office, perform vital technical and support work for the county. Recent actions by the county board to reorganize departments have caused great uncertainty among employees.
Monday afternoon and Thursday morning, women from the Park Rapids and surrounding area are busy playing the game of mah jongg at Citizens National Bank’s community room. The Park Rapids Mah Jongg League started six summers ago on Potato Lake with four players. More than 45 names are now on the mailing list. Mah jongg is an old, Chinese tile game of skill, strategy and calculation spiced with a degree of chance. It is played with 152 tiles with the goal of claiming and discarding tiles to form combinations or hands. It is estimated that at least a half million people in the U.S.

The public comment period on proposed routes for the Sandpiper Pipeline ends Thursday, Aug. 21 at 4:30 p.m. The North Dakota Pipeline Company’s preferred Sandpiper route – which runs from Clearbrook, Minn., to Superior, Wisc. – extends further south than its existing pipelines across northern Minnesota. As proposed by the company, the Sandpiper Pipeline would dip down around Hubbard county, to Park Rapids and then east to Superior from there.

The Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, passed by Minnesota voters on Nov. 4, 2008, has made it possible for the Region 2 Arts Council to award $7,003 in Artist Mentor Grants to young artists in our region.
