By HARLAN MADSEN As a crop and dairy farmer, I could skimp on fertilizing my crops for a couple of years to cut costs; however, my yields will be reduced over time. Most notably, the nutritional value of my crops will be lowered for our dairy herd resulting in substantially reduced production and growth. In either case, the results would be disastrous and put my farm and my family’s economic security at risk. Yet this is the same mentality the legislature and some in the business community abide by when it comes to funding transportation.
BEMIDJI -- Motorists on Highway 197 (Paul Bunyan Drive Northwest) in the city of Bemidji will experience daytime lane closures beginning Wednesday as crews begin work along the eastbound lanes of the highway. Minimal delays should be expected, according to a release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Crews will be replacing and installing pedestrian curb ramps, as well as installing APS signal enhancements.
Several fire departments and the DNR continued to battle a large fire southeast of Aldrich into the early morning hours Sunday. The fire spread quickly with windy, dry conditions.
Because of frost concerns, work on Highway 34 east of Detroit Lakes has been pushed back a week.
First responders scrambled to life flight a baby that was reportedly run over by a truck in rural Becker County Friday afternoon. According to Becker County dispatch, the call came in around 1:45 p.m. from a residence along County Road 133. There was no immediate report of the child's condition, but the air ambulance lifted off at 2:05 p.m. It is unknown at this time where the child is being taken.
The danger of wildfires continues to increase in the Hubbard County and Bemidji areas. Friday night Lakeport, Lake George and DNR firefighters fought a grass fire south of Lake George off County Road 4. They had it contained in an hour.
