Principal Brian Michaelson began Friday afternoon's Veterans Day ceremony at Nevis Schools by reminding the crowd of students, faculty, veterans and community members that the first Veterans Day was declared a national day of remembrance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. "Today, people throughout the country will gather together to remember, to honor and to pay gratitude to those who have served our country," Michaelson said. "We stand amidst the patriots and the family and friends of those who have nobly served."
FERN TOWNSHIP—Efforts to rebuild the town hall in Fern Township that was lost to a fire this past June began nearly two weeks ago. The green metal roof is expected to be in place by the end of the week with the weather expected to turn bad. The new structure will be the same amount of square footage, complete with a functional kitchen, storage room and a large social hall.
Hubbard County Commissioner District 4 incumbent candidate Daniel Stacey was re-elected by defeating challenger Mark Peterson by what Stacey called "a narrow margin of 80 votes." Stacey won the election with 51.86 percent (988) of the vote and Peterson received 47.66 percent (908). There were nine write-in votes. "We'll have to wait for the canvassing board but I'm very honored to be elected again as the District 4 Commissioner," Stacey said when asked to comment on his re-election. "I am happy to serve the residents of Hubbard County to the best of my ability."

Running unopposed, Jarod Senger received 94.05 percent (158) of votes to be elected as the new mayor of Nevis; there were 10 write-ins. Senger will be serving his first two-year term as mayor.
Avid deer hunters began their morning bundled up in blaze orange as they stepped out into the crisp air with an early beginning to the Minnesota deer hunting opener this past Saturday. The skies were clear and the stars were vividly shining through the darkness with only a sliver of a moon. The woods were calm and silent in the early morning hours and the only sound heard were the crunching of fallen leaves beneath the march of hunting boots to the deer stand.

The Nevis School Board at last week's meeting addressed concerns brought to the board by Karrin Lindow in regards to restricting public input during regular board meetings. Chairperson Ed Becker explained the meeting structure and process for public input.
On Monday night, the League of Women Voters Park Rapids Area hosted a candidate forum for the Hubbard County Commissioners in District 4 at the Akeley Community Center. Candidates in the evening's forum were Challenger Mark Peterson and Incumbent Dan Stacey and LWVPRA member, Florence Hedeen served as moderator. Precincts in District 4 are the cities of Akeley and Laporte and the Townships of Akeley, Guthrie, Hart Lake, Hendrickson, Lakeport, Mantrap, Steamboat River and Thorpe.
