The Headwaters Animal Shelter 8th Annual Tails on the Trail event will take place Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Heartland Park. The two-mile walk-a-thon and pet expo on the Heartland Trail helps to raise money for animals in need of homes at the Headwaters Animal Shelter. Benny, a 3-year-old White German Shepherd/Husky mix, has been selected as this year’s Tails on the Trail Grand Marshal.
The Hubbard County Historical Society held a program last Tuesday night presented by Nels Kramer, about the logging history of Hubbard County. According to Kramer, there were several logging camps in operation in the 1900s but the most successful was Thomas Barlow (T.B.) Walker and he became known as "the King of Pine".
Josiah Laubenstein and Darrell Johnston of Highway Walkers Media made a stop-over in Park Rapids Mondaynight as part of their journey south. The two filmmakers started their trip from Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 7 and will take the next 30 days to travel the historic Jefferson Highway to New Orleans, Louisiana while filming a documentary chronicling their experiences.
Typically the Minnesota Fishing Opener coincides with Mother’s Day weekend but this year’s opener kicks off May 14. Early ice-out and a significant early-spring warm-up could have a positive effect on this weekend’s fishing opener if anglers are aware of where to make the catch. Ice-out in Hubbard County began nearly two weeks earlier than normal this year during a warm-up in March.
May 10, 2016 has officially been declared as "Drive The Jefferson Highway Day" in Park Rapids. Mayor Pat Mikesh and the city council approved the proclamation at the Park Rapids City Council meeting Tuesday night, brought forth by two documentary film makers, Josiah Laubenstein and Darrell Johnston.
In one way or another I have been a part of this community my entire life. I was born here, I grew up here and I am very fond of this place and the people in it and I am certain there are others that feel the same as me. I know the destruction of fire; I have experienced first-hand the devastation it causes and without the rapid and courageous efforts of the men and women who work to protect us, our city could look much different today.
Jen Grewe is the 2016 Park Rapids Walk MS Ambassador. MS Walk: Park Rapids will be held Sunday, May 1 at Heartland Park. Registration starts at 11 a.m. and the walk begins at 12 noon. Participants can choose to walk one mile, three miles or five miles.

Thanks to the Accountable Communities for Health grant through the Minnesota Department of Health CHI St. Joseph’s Health hosted a presentation on understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to build capacity to help communities better understand mental health issues. The grant serves four county areas including Hubbard, Clearwater, Beltrami and Lake of the Woods counties.
North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) runs 4,600 miles through seven states; it is the longest National Scenic Trail in the United States. In 1980, the congressional authorization of the NCT prompted the North Country Trail Association as the volunteer organization to partner with the National Park Service in the building and maintaining of the trail.
