Robert "Bob" Melina, 72, of Menahga, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis. He was born March 26, 1937 in Minneapolis to Robert and Bernice (Smith) Melina. He attended school in Minneapolis and graduated from Central High School in 1955. He was a P.B.X. installer and repairer for Northwestern Bell Co. in Minneapolis for 33 years.
Kathleen Effie Larson, 85, of Park Rapids, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, N.D. She was born April 1, 1924 in Cottonwood County to Daniel A. and Mabel (Clark) Johnson. She graduated from Walnut Grove High School in 1941. She married Melvin Franklin Larson on Sept. 12, 1945 at the Evangelical Free Church in Nevis. She worked at Wimpy's Café and Badoura State Nursery, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Hubbard Christian Missionary Alliance Church. She was also Sunday school superintendent and teacher for 20 years.
Mary Ann Kumpula Geddes, 75, of Park Rapids, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at her home after a battle with cancer. She was born March 10, 1934, on her parents' farm, Antti and Anna Kumpula, near Wolf Lake. The family moved to Menahga in 1941, where she graduated from high school as valedictorian. On June 10, 1956, she married Roger Geddes in Menahga. They settled in International Falls in 1959. She was a registered nurse who worked in several capacities, especially public health.

Elizabeth "Bette" Hildegaarde Norgaard, 84, of Nevis, died Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids. She was born May 2, 1925 in Stacyville, Iowa the daughter of Lorenz and Francis (Puettman) Kramer. She grew up in Meyer, Iowa. She attended grade school there through the eighth grade. She lived in Waterloo, Iowa where she was employed at several places, including Rath packing plant and as a waitress.
Deborah Denise Pritchard, 55, of Walker died Sunday, April 12, 2009 at her home. She was born Oct. 18, 1953 in Dawson to LaVern and Alice (Devick) Hansen. Following high school she lived in the Park Rapids area before moving to Hackensack where she worked for many years for Bill Johnson and John Nelson at the Yellow Brick Road. She was currently employed at the Northern Lights Casino as a supervisor in food service.
Ruth Virginia (Belanger) Harris, 90, of Akeley died Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the St. Michael's Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. She was born Sept. 3, 1918 in Warroad. She lived with her family on a farm in that area and then moved to the Pelland Junction west of International Falls. When Ruth moved to Akeley and lived along 11th Crow Wing Lake, she crossed the lake in a horse drawn sleigh to attend school in Akeley, where she graduated. She married Jess Harris Sept. 14, 1940.

Elizabeth "Liz" Marie Utke, 76, of Brandon, S.D. formerly of Park Rapids, died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at SouthRidge Health Care Nursing Home in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was born July 9, 1932 in Audubon to Thurman and Huldah Annette (Hanson) Wetteland. She grew up and attended school in Audubon, where she graduated from high school in 1950. She went on to attend Concordia College in Moorhead for one year, and then one year at Moorhead State College where she attained her teacher's certificate. She moved to Enderlin, N.D., where she taught elementary school. She married John E. Utke on Oct.
Betty Irene Spindler, 77, of Park Rapids, died Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Park Rapids following a battle against cancer. She was born to Irene and Berthold Hartung May 10, 1931 in Wadena County. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then attended Verndale Public High School, graduating in 1949. As a young woman, she worked in the Wadena area for a number of years. In the mid-1950s she ventured to Park Rapids where she worked as a waitress for Lundberg's Supper Club. On March 21, 1958 she married Forrest O. Spindler in Park Rapids.
