ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- Smoking caused a mobile home fire that killed two people in Alexandria on Jan. 5, according to authorities. The Alexandria Fire Department, the Alexandria Police Department and the State Fire Marshal completed the investigation and said the fire at Viking City Mobile Home Park at 1611 6th Avenue will be classified as accidental.
Pop performer Pink will sing the national anthem before the Super Bowl in Minneapolis, the NFL and NBC announced Monday, Jan. 8. It will be Pink’s first performance at a Super Bowl. Justin Timberlake, as previously announced, will headline the halftime show Feb. 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Pink’s 2018 Beautiful Trauma World tour is set to kick off on March 1 in Phoenix.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A 20-year-old Bemidji man was arrested Monday night after allegedly setting fire to a home near Bemidji. According to a news release from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and the Bemidji Fire Department responded to a fire at the 700 block of Sunset Way at about 8:22 p.m., and found flames and heavy smoke coming from the lower level of the home.
PILLAGER, Minn. -- Two stranded Brainerd motorists were found after getting lost in the woods amid temperatures roughly 23 below zero early Sunday morning, Dec. 31. Pillager Fire Chief Randy Lee said his firefighters were dispatched just after 3 a.m. Sunday to aid the Cass County Sheriff's office in locating two stranded motorists who had gotten lost and run out of gas in the Pillsbury State Forest, north of Pillager.
RED LAKE, Minn.—An overdose on the Red Lake reservation prompted law enforcement there to warn the public about heroin-related risks Tuesday. According to a release posted on the Red Lake Police Department's Facebook page Tuesday afternoon, an overdose victim was "dumped" at the Red Lake hospital on either Monday or Tuesday. In the release, the police department urged bystanders and friends of an overdose victim to remain with the person until help arrives, and emphasized the importance of quickly obtaining medical treatment.
TENSTRIKE, Minn.—Two people were injured Tuesday, Dec. 19, and a highway closed after a crash involving a propane delivery truck north of Bemidji.
WHITE EARTH, Minn. — A spike in overdoses on the White Earth Reservation in the past 48 hours prompted law enforcement there to warn the public Tuesday, Dec. 19, about heroin-related risks. A news release sent Tuesday morning said that in the past two days the White Earth Police Department and the Mahnomen County Sheriff's Department responded to seven "overdose related" calls, two of which resulted in deaths. In the release, White Earth Police Chief Michael LaRoque said that even regular heroin users are at risk of an overdose and encouraged them to seek help.
BEMIDJI—A woman drowned and a man survived after the ATV they were riding went through the ice on Grace Lake early Saturday, Dec. 16. According to the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office, the pair went through the ice just after 12 a.m. Saturday. Grace Lake straddles Beltrami and Hubbard counties and is about 8 miles southeast of Bemidji just off U.S. Highway 2.
Alex James French, 19, of Park Rapids has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony second-degree burglary. A gross misdemeanor charge of check forgery was dismissed in a plea agreement. According to court records, on Jan. 28 he wrote three checks totaling $240 at Chief's Corner Store in rural Becker County. The checks had allegedly been stolen and forged.
