It could be a prosperous new year for someone in Carlton County in northeast Minnesota. Or maybe it was someone visiting the county. Either way, according to Minnesota State Lottery communications manager Debbie Hoffman, a $1 million Powerball ticket was sold in the county on Nov. 1, but thus far no one has stepped forward to claim it.
A Menagha, Minn., man is hospitalized after he lost control of his pickup truck and hit a bridge guardrail in Bemidji Wednesday morning. Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Tiffani Nielson said Joshua E. Nevala, 20, of Menagha, was headed east on Highway 2 when he lost control of his Dodge Ram pickup on the icy road near Fifth Street Northwest. The pickup spun out and hit a guardrail, Nielson said. Nevala was taken to Sanford Hospital in Bemidji with minor injuries. Three passengers were not hurt in the crash.
FARMINGTON, Minn. -- A 17-year-old Farmington High School student has been charged with two misdemeanors and 15 other students have been referred to a diversionary program for their roles in a prank that left students crying and "freaking out" during the school's homecoming week. "This case appears to be a type of hazing incident associated with homecoming activities," Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said. "These types of activities are clearly inappropriate, dangerous and need to be appropriately addressed."
Minnesota Congressman Rick Nolan announced on his Facebook page Monday that his youngest daughter, Katherine, has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and said he and his family will be meeting with doctors over the next few days regarding her condition.
CASS LAKE -- The Cass County Sheriff's Office has reported several unrelated incidents of snowmobiles, ATVs and utility vehicles going through ice or becoming stuck in slushy conditions. No injuries were reported. The majority of reports were from an area near a large ice heave in the Sand Point area of Leech Lake. The sheriff's office urges strong caution to be used on all area lakes.
LARIMORE, N.D. – A bus taking students home after school here Monday struck a westbound train, killing the driver, 62-year-old Max Danner, and a 17-year-old girl.
On the second day after his dogs went missing, after a search by plane was called off because of icing, Chris Verhel nearly gave up hope. “When I knew we couldn’t fly, my heart just dropped,” Verhel said on Saturday.
Thin ice on Otter Tail Lake claimed a Battle Lake man’s pickup truck while the two occupants were rescued from its roof late Friday night. Otter Tail County Sheriff’s officials said Robert Karst, 75, called to report he and an acquaintance were stranded on the roof of Karst’s partially submerged pickup. The pickup had broken through a thin layer of ice on the northwest corner of Otter Tail Lake near a pressure ridge.
