She was 28 years old and had lived at the zoo for nearly 27 years. The Kodiak brown bear’s condition had deteriorated in the past three days; she had not been eating and had trouble getting up.
A former nurse who was fired from a Crookston nursing home last year for sticking residents' fentanyl patches on his tongue made his first court appearance Wednesday on the charges of stealing narcotics. David Matthew Perala, 35, was charged in Minnesota 9th District Court in Crookston with four counts of theft of controlled substances, each a felony, and one count of possession of controlled substances, a felony, according to the court records.

A 19-year-old woman found outside Sunday morning may have been lying outdoors for some time, Bemidji Police said Tuesday. Police said they responded to a call of an unresponsive female at 9:30 a.m. Sunday on the 1600 block of Calihan Avenue. Emergency personnel found Hannah Rolschau, 19, of Zimmerman, Minn., lying in the snow found outside a residence, according to a release Tuesday from the Bemidji Police Department.

Montana officials have notified Sidney, Mont., and Williston, N.D., both downstream from the leak, and municipal water systems there are being tested for contamination, too, according to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
One man was arrested for drunken driving after driving into Otter Tail Lake on Saturday night. According to police, about 9 p.m. Saturday, Fergus Falls resident Taylor Ray Perala drove into open water on Otter Tail Lake, about 20 miles north and east of Fergus. Perala and a passenger were able to get out of the partially submerged vehicle and get to safety.
