REMER, Minn.—The Cass County Sheriff's Office recovered the body of a 76-year-old man Monday, June 18, on Upper Menton Lake near Remer in north-central Minnesota. The sheriff's office received a report of a possible drowning at 6:27 p.m. When deputies and responders arrived they were able to recover the body of the man. Deputies learned the man was swimming when he went under the water for an extended period of time.

ST. PAUL -- An increase in cyclospora infections, spread through consumption of imported fresh produce, has affected at least three dozen Minnesotans and has prompted the Minnesota Department of Health to further its investigation. One outbreak has been identified among people who ate at Sonora Grill in Minneapolis in mid-May, the health department said. To date, 17 customers have reported illness. The restaurant is fully cooperating with the investigation, and investigators say they do not have any indication that there is an ongoing risk to patrons.
A 31-year-old Coon Rapids, Minn., man died after a canoe capsized in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness Saturday night, June 9, in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region. The body of Joseph Bennett Fedick was recovered from the water at 3:34 p.m. Monday about 200 yards away from the Perent Lake campsite where he had been staying, according to a report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Police are searching for the suspect after a 24-year-old man was shot early Sunday morning, June 10, inside a Bemidji apartment building. Police Chief Mike Mastin said Monday afternoon that the man was shot once in the leg and remains hospitalized at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. Multiple shots were fired, Mastin said. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. Police have not yet identified a person of interest, Mastin said.
BRAINERD, Minn. -- A 21-year-old Brainerd woman was killed early Thursday morning, May 31, following a head-on crash in foggy conditions. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was called to the crash at 4:31 a.m. involving three vehicles southeast of Brainerd on Crow Wing County Highway 2. The vehicle with the fatality caught on fire.
ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Board of Pharmacy and Attorney General Lori Swanson have sued Arizona-based Insys Therapeutics, alleging it illegally markets a fentanyl painkiller. The suit filed Wednesday, May 30, claims the company allowed fentanyl, an opioid it sells, to be used for conditions not approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration and in higher doses than allowed. It is only approved for pain in some cancer patients.
DULUTH — Two teenagers were rescued from Lake Superior Friday afternoon, May 25, off of Park Point after their inflatable raft drifted too far out to safely return. The call came in at about 2:24 p.m. of two women on an inflatable raft in Lake Superior that was approximately a half mile out from shore near the 2100 block of Minnesota Avenue. They appeared to be unable to swim back to shore, according to authorities. The Duluth Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard made contact with the pair and brought them back to shore.
CANNON FALLS, Minn. -- A couple were held at gunpoint in their home in Cannon Falls Township Tuesday morning, May 22, and robbed of cash and belongings, authorities said. CLOQUET, Minn. -- Authorities are investigating the death of a worker at paper and pulp mill in Cloquet on Tuesday, May 15. “We are shocked and saddened to confirm the death of Mr. Ryan Martin,” Sappi corporate spokeswoman Olga Karagiannis wrote in an email Wednesday. “Sappi is investigating and working with authorities to understand the cause of death.” The company did not offer any further information on the circumstances of Martin’s death. Cloquet Police Department and Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry officials also did not immediately have further details.
