The following information contains felony charges from complaints filed recently in Hubbard County District Court. Burglary Sean Michael Ferguson, 27, of Menahga, is charged with two counts of felony burglary for allegedly breaking into the Park Rapids Senior Center on Dec. 17. Park Rapids Police Sergeant Dan Garner responded to a report of a male breaking into the center. An employee said when he arrived on the morning of Dec. 16 he observed a male party sleeping on the couch.

Drug possession Jerald Dean Drewes, 63, of Nevis is charged with one count of fifth degree drug possession resulting from a Dec. 8 arrest. Hubbard County Sheriff's Sergeant Kruchowski, Deputy Kritzeck and Investigator Diekmann were investigating a domestic assault on Dec. 8 and learned the suspect may be located at the Jerald Dean Drewes residence on 200th Street in Nevis.
Outdoors writer and fishing enthusiast Gary Korsgaden will speak Friday, Jan. 6 at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources roundtable in Minneapolis. Korsgaden was selected to speak to the over 400 invited attendees, including the governor, state senators and representatives, lake groups, statewide fishing groups, and all levels of the DNR from the commissioner down.
Get your New Year's resolutions on track on the first day of the New Year. Join Itasca State Park staff for an invigorating snowshoe hike from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1 to explore the backcountry area of Itasca. The "First Day Hike: A Backcountry Exploration" will go along the shores of several lakes, over a rolling landscape and through a mature mixed old growth pine and deciduous forest. This will be a strenuous hike. Meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center at 12:30 p.m.
When we talk about serving on a board of directors, it may not sound like the most exciting thing to do when it comes to civic duty, but these boards are essential in service to the community.
Tickets are on sale for the 19th annual Park Rapids American Legion Fishing Contest. The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Fish Hook Lake. The ice fishing derby attracts hundreds of anglers and offers over $130,000 in prizes. A $40 ticket grants access to the derby contest, plus a chance to win raffle prizes. Grand prize for the 19th largest fish is a 2017 Ice Castle RV fish house from Smokey Hills Outdoor Store.

We got the snow we wanted. Let's hope, for the sake of outdoor recreation and winter tourism, there's more to come soon. Snow brings plenty of fun but can also lead to problems on the roadways. These first couple bouts of winter weather, the first of which dumped at least a foot of snow on the area, is our annual wake-up call for safe winter driving. Possibly lulled by the warm fall weather many drivers seem to forget how to drive in the snow. This is Minnesota, we know winter is coming each year but yet we don't always take the best and safest approach to winter driving.
A 19-year-old Laporte man was injured Monday, Nov. 14 when he accidently shot himself in the leg. The Hubbard County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of an accidental gunshot victim at 11:50 a.m. Monday on Osprey Drive near Laporte.
