Officers were elected at the annual Hubbard County Republican Convention on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Northwoods Bank community room. The first speaker of the morning was Minnesota House Rep. The Minnesota Department of Transportation will start spring truck weight restrictions in the north central frost zone Saturday, Feb. 25. Spring load restrictions are already in place in the south, southeast, central and metro frost zones.

The Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning (HCLL) kicks off its spring season Tuesday, Feb. 14 at Armory Square. Sharon Natzel, president of the Hubbard County Coalition of Lake Associations (COLA), is the guest speaker. She'll be discussing ""Hubbard County Water Quality and You." HCLL programs are open to the public, free of charge and handicap accessible. The presentation is from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Park Rapids Area High School's theater department took first place Feb. 4 in Section 6A One Act Play competition for their performance, "A Piece of My Heart." PRAHS holds the state record for taking one acts to State competition.
The Park Rapids area residents benefit from a recent investment into extending high-speed internet across the state. Paul Bunyan Communications last month was awarded a Border to Border Broadband Grant by the state of Minnesota to expand its fiber optic services to portions of southwest Hubbard County and a small portion of west central Becker County. The expansion area is located to the south and west of Park Rapids.
Bemidji State University's American Indian Resource Center (AIRC) will host an inaugural fundraising dinner for American Indian Student Success, featuring a three-course meal prepared by Oglala Lakota chef Sean Sherman on Feb. 10. Proceeds will support the university's American Indian students. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. in the AIRC's Gathering Place.
Audrey's Purple Dream returns to 11th Crow Wing Lake in Akeley on Saturday, Feb. 11. The 12th annual event, called "Our Answer to Cancer," features a fishing tournament, Purple Plunge and raffle to raise money for cancer victims and their families. Fishing tournament registration begins at 10 a.m., with the tournament running noon to 2:30 p.m. The popular Purple Plunge, where entrants jump into the icy waters of 11th Crow Wing, is 3 p.m. with registration starting at 1 p.m.
