PARK RAPIDS, Minn.—Maybe it's just a breather, but the long-simmering controversy between the R.D. Offutt Farms' potato field expansion project and environmentalists concerned about groundwater and lake pollution may have come to an end or at least reached a turning point.
ST. PAUL -- Absentee voting, where Minnesotans can cast their ballots from home or at their county courthouses, is up 150 percent this year so far compared to 2016, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon. As of Thursday, July 26, 29,657 voters have cast ballots compared to 11,806 in 2016. In the first year it was available in 2014, 9,062 people had voted by this time.
NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Goodhue County has temporarily closed the Lake Byllesby beach until further notice following a discharge of raw and treated sewage into the Cannon River Tuesday, July 3, upstream in Northfield.
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Minnesotan Lois Riess now faces the death penalty in her Florida first-degree murder case. Prosecutors said they’re seeking the death penalty for the southeast Minnesota woman who’s accused of killing her husband at their worm farm near Blooming Prairie and then a woman visiting Fort Myers Beach in southern Florida before leading authorities on a cross-country manhunt, according to the Fort Myers News-Bulletin.
ST. PAUL—Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials are urging boaters, anglers and others to be careful on swollen rivers across mostly southern Minnesota, although some rivers farther north are also running at dangerous levels. Twelve rivers are reporting "very high" water levels after recent heavy rains. The flooding is covering parks, trails and farmland across that region. The DNR urges "extreme caution" in these areas.
ST. PAUL -- Brad Parsons, a 31-year fisheries veteran and current central region fisheries manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, has been selected as the new fisheries chief for the DNR. He begins his new duties Wednesday, July 25.
ST. PAUL -- Minnesota is ranked the second best state for working dads, according to a study released Monday, June 11, as Father’s Day approaches. WalletHub, a personal finance website known for its in-depth studies, said one of the reasons Minnesota was ranked near the top was that it has the highest median family income adjusted for cost of living of $95,483. That’s two times higher than in Hawaii, which has the lowest at $47,631.
ST. PAUL -- Minnesota is the state in the country with the least drug problems, according to a personal finance website that studies a variety of issues. The state didn’t top the list in any of the key metrics used by WalletHub researchers and experts, but was ranked low in almost every category.
ST. PAUL --Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has announced he plans to skip early June’s Republican state convention and go straight to the Aug.14 primary, drawing sharp criticism from another GOP candidate in the race and the Democratic party. Pawlenty’s decision means he won’t be seeking the party’s endorsement. In a statement Tuesday, his campaign said the two-term governor entered the race too late for to have a “fair fight” for the endorsement.

The red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service is for the following counties: Polk (west), Kittson, Roseau, Lake Of The Woods, Marshall (west), Marshall (east), Beltrami (north), Pennington, Red Lake, Polk (east), Clearwater (north), and Koochiching.
