Park Rapids groups plan Saturday event to promote peace, unity

A tree knocked during an early morning storm today fell on a campsite shelter at Camp Wilderness near Park Rapids. Camp officials reported winds of 70 mph and an estimated 200 trees down. No injuries were reported. (Photo submitted)

Eleven Girl Scouts from Park Rapids, Brainerd, Duluth and St. Cloud traveled to Costa Rica. The group toured a coffee plantation in the foothills of Poás Volcano. Costa Rica is famed for its savory coffee, grown in nutrient-rich, volcanic soil. Each region of the country produces a distinctive flavor, much like Italy and its wines.

Tim Ranisate cuts up a large cottonwood at his house west of Park Rapids on Monday after Saturday’s storm. Tim was working in western North Dakota when his wife called to tell him the tree was down. Tim said the old cottonwood measured about 3 1/2 feet wide at the base. Heavy rain continued Monday in the Park Rapids area with residents reporting 5-6 inches on Monday and 10-14 inches total from Thursday to Monday.
