Rob Scott of Crane Lake, Minn., holds a lake trout he caught Feb. 8 on Lac La Croix, a Minnesota-Ontario border lake northeast of Crane Lake. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources enforcement officers, working in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, have confiscated the fish. Anglers often fool themselves during the fall bite.  Though new, super-secret presentations might work, relying upon the standard procedures such as Northland Roach Rigs or Fireball Jigs, each tipped with a minnow, or trolling crankbaits will offer the most consistent success.
