The cacophonous sounds coming from a wooded area west of Long Lake are the cries of dozens of Great Blue Herons nesting. It's a rarity to have herons nest in upland forests, said Tom Stursa, DNR wildlife technician. He said they usually prefer lowland areas such as tamarac trees, but this group has been nesting here for years. A cabin on Big Cormorant Lake south of Audubon was destroyed early Wednesday morning. Firefighters responded to a call at 12:32 a.m. from a neighbor who reported the fire. The cabin belongs to Milt Tweten of Moorhead, but no one was home at the time of the fire. It is located on Maple Lodge Road, Pikes Bay on County Road 11, south of Audubon. Audubon and Detroit Lakes fire departments were on scene.
