Work on the Highway 34 project from Park Rapids to Akeley started bright and early Monday with culvert work just east of County Road 4. Road crews and MnDOT officials are anxiously watching Minnesota politics, hoping to avoid a governmental shutdown July 1. The 3.2 mile stretch to Dorset corner is supposed to be finished by then. It is the Highway 34 intersection through Nevis that most bothers residents as a safety hazard. County roads 2 and 13 cross the busy highway at an angle. There wasn't money in the budget to straighten it out, DOT officials said, so some Nevis residents have suggested a lower speed limit through town. (Sarah Smith / Enterprise)
