The 2013 Governor's Fishing Opener hosted by the Park Rapids Community is looking for additional volunteers in several capacities.  Volunteering to be a fishing "host" is one of those, where you would take a couple people fishing on the opening day of the northern and walleye season this coming spring. Mike Burkel of Badger, Minn., assembles a Slush Copter in his shop near Badger. Burkel, who invented the new device for clearing slush from ice fishing holes, said sales of the product have been brisk since hitting the market about three weeks ago. A battery-powered drill runs the Slush Copter, which creates a whirl pool-like effect in the water to force slush down the hole.

Members from Grace Chapel will journey to Antiqua, Guatemala to build houses similar to this one beginning February 17.  A fish dinner fundraiser with a fishing tackle silent auction will take place on Jan. 19 at Grace Chapel, south of Bagley to support the excursion.

George Bjorklund of Park Rapids loves to catch northern pike.  No matter the size, he enjoys a good battle, even if the fish is released.  Anglers looking to catch even larger pike throughout our area have some good opportunities, and trophy destinations aren't far away.
