Three area wrestlers open state tournament with wins
Three of the four area wrestlers opened the state tournament with wins Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Park Rapids' Ashton Clark coasted to a 15-0 technical fall win over Scott West's Colton Bahr in the first round of the Class AA 113-pound division.
Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis' Kyle Schmidt upset Zumbrota-Mazeppa's Jarret Haglund with a 3-1 minor decision in the first round of the Class A 220-pound division. Haglund entered state rated No. 1 at that weight and the No. 2 seed.
United North Central's Toby HIntzman rolled to a 15-0 technical fall win over Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie's Gideon Ervasti in the opening round of the Class A 152-pound bracket.
WHAN's Dillon McGee dropped a 6-4 decision to Minneota's Teddy Pesch in the first round of the Class A 132-pound division.
The championship quarterfinals will be held Friday night (March 2). The state tournament concludes Saturday (March 3).
