Wrestlers settle for a split

Wins in the final four matches gave the Park Rapids wrestling team a split in a season-opening triangular meet at the Century School gym Thursday night.

Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena opened the season with a 51-21 win over Park Rapids and a 43-34 win over United North Central before the Panthers rallied for a 37-30 victory over UNC in the final match.

Four forfeits and three pins helped BCLB jump out to a 51-9 lead over the Panthers in the opening match.

Ashton Clark's reversal and nearfall against Trevor Janssen in the third period led to a 5-0 minor decision at 120 pounds in a battle of rated wrestlers as Park Rapids trailed 12-3 before BCLB won the next seven matches for a commanding 48-3 lead.

The Panthers won three of the final four matches as Cody Dravis received a forfeit win at 182 before Zach Hocking's pin at the 5:37 mark at 220 and Dwayne Johnson's pin at the 2:20 mark at 285 concluded the match. Hocking trailed 4-2 before an escape and takedown in the second period and escape and takedown in the third period made it 8-4 while Johnson built a 4-0 lead with takedowns in the first and second periods before both recorded pins.

In the second match, BCLB used six pins to defeat the Warriors. Ethan Hendrickson's 9-1 major decision at 106, Tucker Holmer's forfeit win at 120, Isaac Tellers' pin at 126, forfeit wins by Bridger Bettin's at 160 and Toby Hintzman at 170, and Jared Seibert's pin at 285 accounted for UNC's points.

UNC built a 30-19 lead before the Panthers rallied for the win in the final match.

After Hendrickson opened the dual with a forfeit win at 106, Lucas Kritzeck used a takedown and nearfall in the first period, a takedown in the second period and a takedown in the third period for a 9-3 decision at 112 before Clark used a takedown in the third period for a 2-0 minor decision at 120 to give Park Rapids a 6-6 tie.

Ethan Trout received a forfeit win at 126 for UNC, but Kobe Burton's pin in 3:58 at 132 tied the match at 12-12. After Eion Ness received a forfeit win at 138, the Panthers claimed a 19-18 advantage on Joe Klein's 10-2 major decision at 145 and Landen Burlingame's 3-0 minor decision at 152. Klein used a takedown and nearfall in the first period and a pair of takedowns in the third period to spark his win while Burlingame prevailed with a first-period takedown and escape in the second period.

After the Warriors regained a 30-19 lead on pins by Hintzman at 160 and Bettin at 170, Park Rapids rallied for the win on Dravis' pin in 33 seconds at 182, Jack Hensel's 5-1 minor decision at 195, Hocking's pin in 2:59 at 220 and Johnson's 8-2 minor decision at 285. Hensel used an escape and takedown in the second period and takedown in the third period for his win while a takedown and nearfall in the first period and escape and takedown in the third period sparked Johnson to the win.

In the latest state Class AA poll, Clark was rated No. 3 at 113 and Dravis was rated No. 3 at 170. For UNC, Hendrickson was rated No. 10 at 106 and Hintzman was rated No. 6 at 152 in the state Class A poll. BCLB, which is rated No. 10 as a team, has five wrestlers rated in the state Class A poll: Janssen (No. 2 at at 106), Lucas Reiplinger (No. 8 at 138), Ian Frenzel (No. 3 at 160), Hunter Wilcowski (No. 4 at 195) and Chase Johnson (No. 5 at 285).

"I thought we were a little flat against BCLB, but that is a little understandable being the first match of the year," said Park Rapids head coach Matt Clark. "I thought our boys did a nice job against UNC. Our young guys got some big wins and our upper weights did what they needed to do to win the dual. It was a nice win for the boys."
