Coborn surpasses 1,000 digs in Panthers' win over Tigers

Kaisa Coborn surpassed 1,000 digs in her career in helping the Park Rapids volleyball team rally for a 28-30, 25-19, 25-17, 25-10 win over Nevis Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

Nevis held the lead for most of Set 1 before finally putting the Panthers away. A tip by Kamree Carlson, an ace serve by Katelyn Weaver and a kill by Rilee Michaelson gave Park Rapids a 3-2 lead before kills by Jessica Swanda and Kia Heide gave the Tigers a 5-3 edge. Kills by Michaelson and Carlson were offset by a pair of tips by Andrea Dudley and a kill by Ashley Pyburn as Nevis clung to a 9-7 lead. The Tigers used a tip by Cole Mastley and kills by Swanda and Pyburn to build a 17-13 advantage. Weaver served an ace and Kendra Scholz had a kill for the Panthers. Park Rapids used a kill by Coborn, a kill and tip by Carlson, and Coborn's 1,000th career dig to tie the set at 18-18. The lead would see-saw the rest of the way as both teams battled through 10 ties. Kills by Carlson and Scholz were offset by kills by Pyburn, Makenna Frazier and Swanda as the Tigers led 22-21. Michaelson followed with two kills and a tip as Park Rapids held a 24-22 edge before kills by Pyburn and Heide tied the set at 25-25. Kills by Michaelson and Coborn put the Panthers in front 27-26 before a kill by Pyburn and a tip by Dudley gave Nevis a 28-27 edge. A tip by Sadie Thurner finally ended the set.

Set 2 was tied at 15-15 before the Panthers closed with a 10-4 run to tie the match. Two tips by Michaelson gave the Panthers a quick 2-0 lead before a pair of kills by Swanda and an ace serve by Pyburn gave Nevis a 5-2 advantage. A kill by Mastley, a tip by Swanda and two kills by Heide kept the Tigers in front 9-6 before kills by Coborn and Carlson and an ace serve by Kora Just tied the set at 10-10. A tip by Frazier and two kills by Pyburn were offset by a pair of kills by Carlson as the set was tied at 15-15. Michaelson started the Panthers' set-clinching run with a kill and ace serve while two kills by Carlson, an ace serve by Just and a kill by Scholz evened the match.

A kill by Carlson, two kills by Michaelson, an ace serve by Scholz, and two kills by Coborn gave the Panthers a 10-6 lead to open Set 3. A tip by Heide and a kill by Pyburn kept the Tigers within 13-10 before Just served six points to extend the lead to 20-10. Carlson had a kill and Scholz had a kill and tip during that run. After a kill by Swanda made it 21-15, two kills and tip by Michaelson and an ace serve by Carlson closed out that set.

Park Rapids took control at the start of Set 4 as kills by Carlson, Michaelson and Coborn produced a quick 7-3 lead. After an ace serve by Michaelson, Coborn served an ace to start a run of six straight service points. Weaver had a tip during that stretch as the Panthers extended their advantage to 16-4. A tip by Kayleah Breitweser and kills by Scholz and Michaelson helped close out the match.

Pyburn finished with 13 kills, 10 service points and 10 digs while Heide had 11 kills. Swanda added eight kills while Dudley had 31 set assists, 13 digs and four kills. Thurner (7), Heide (6) and Cora Umthun (5) combined for 18 service points while Thurner (11) and Maggie Carrier (8) combined for 19 digs for the Tigers, who had 10 service errors and 25 hitting errors in falling to 1-1 on the season.

Carlson's 17 kills, Michaelson's 16 kills and Coborn's 9 kills led the Panthers' offense. Just served 14 points while Coborn and Weaver served 10 points each. Weaver had 44 set assists with Coborn (21), Carlson (21), Just (19), Weaver (11) and Michaelson (11) tallying double digits in digs. The Panthers improved to 2-0 on the season despite having 17 hitting errors.
