Tigers defeat Laporte, improve record to 7-3
An eight-run fourth inning sealed Nevis' 12-2 five-inning victory over Laporte in a Northland Conference baseball game Friday at Nevis.
Luke DeWulf went 2 for 3 with two RBI, Michael Landquist went 2 for 3 with two runs and Dillon McGee went 2 for 3 to pace the Tigers' nine-hit attack. Adam Thompson scored twice while Jack DeWulf, Jack Landquist, Luke DeWulf, Tucker Roehl, Dan Mistic, Sam Hitchcock, Ethan Tauber and McGee scored once each. Jack Landquist, Michael Landquist, Hitchcock, Andrew Dudley and McGee had an RBI apiece. Thompson stole three bases while Michael Landquist and McGee had two steals each.
Roehl was the winning pitcher after allowing two runs on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts over three innings. Dudley walked two and struck out three over the final two innings.
The win lifted Nevis to 3-1 in the conference and 7-3 overall. Laporte fell to 0-5 in conference games and 0-7 overall.
Wolves blank Tigers
The Tigers managed only one hit in an 11-0 conference loss to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at Walker on April 25.
W-H-A scored all 11 runs in the third inning in this game that was ended after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Jack DeWulf had Nevis' only hit and took the loss by allowing 10 runs (six earned) on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts over the first 2.1 innings. McGee allowed one run on two hits in the third while Tucker Roehl pitched a scoreless fourth inning.
The win lifted the Wolves to 3-0 in the conference and 4-0 overall. W-H-A was rated No. 4 in last week's state Class A poll and is tied with Blackduck atop the conference standings. Pine River-Backus is 2-0 in conference play.
