Allysa Kimber took control down the stretch as Bertha-Hewitt defeated Nevis 65-56 in the first round of the Section 5A North girls basketball tournament Monday night at the Tiger Arena.

Nevis, the No. 8 seed, led 53-49 with 1:57 to play before Kimber sparked a 16-0 run by converting a 4-point play, hitting a jumper and making seven straight free throws to give the No. 9-seeded Bears the win.

"That was a tough one for the girls. We seemed to have them at the end of the game and we let it slip away," said Nevis head coach Brad Neyens. "The back-breaker for us was when (Kimber) hit an 'and 1' 3-pointer to tie the game. That stole the momentum and we never got it back. We have been preaching discipline and making smart decisions and it may have cost us that game."

A layup by Kia Heide and two baskets off rebounds by Emma Bliss gave the Tigers a 7-4 lead with 13:52 to play in the first half. Three-pointers by Erica VanDenheuvel, Kaija Welshalla and Jade Christi gave B-H a 25-18 edge at the 1:54 mark before a jumper by Bliss and a layup by Tori Carrier at the buzzer gave the Tigers a 26-25 lead at the half.

The Tigers claimed a 45-38 lead with 9:44 to play as Bliss scored off two rebounds, Montana Baker hit two jumpers, Ashley Pyburn hit two 3-pointers, Madisyn Lucas hit a 3-pointer and Heide scored off a steal. Welshalla and Christi connected on 3-pointers for the Bears, but a jumper by Bliss and five free throws by Baker gave Nevis a 53-49 edge before Kimber took over in the final two minutes.

Kimber finished with 23 points while Welshalla (12), VanDenheuvel (11) and Christi (10) also hit double figures as the Bears improved to 5-20 to advance.

Bliss tallied a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while adding six steals to lead Nevis. Baker (11) and Carrier (10) also scored in double figures while Baker and Katie Kamphaus had seven rebounds each. Pyburn had four steals and Lucas had three assists for the Tigers, who end the season with a 4-21 record.

"It's important for our girls to remember this feeling and learn from it and become a better team," said Neyens. "We left it on the floor and I couldn't be prouder of my girls. Our future is bright and we will get better. We have the talent. Now we just need to put in the work."
