Tigers stay alive in Section 6A baseball playoffs

     The Nevis baseball team remained alive in the Section 6A tournament with wins over Sebeka and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale last week.

     Nevis, the No. 3 seed in the north, opened the double-elimination tournament with a 2-1 win in eight innings over No. 6 Sebeka last Tuesday at Nevis. Austin Becker went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, including the game-winner in the eighth inning. Becker also was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on five hits with 13 strikeouts in eight innings. Gavin Becker went 2 for 4 with a run and Victor Mastley scored a run as the Tigers finished with six hits. Sebeka closed the season with a 7-12 record.

     Frazee, the No. 2 seed in the north, threw the Tigers into the losers’ bracket with a 9-1 win Thursday at Menahga. Mastley drove in Andrew Dudley for Nevis’ only run in the second inning. Dudley, Spencer Stack and Austin Becker had the three hits for the Tigers. Brett Byer took the loss by allowing six runs on five hits in three innings while Dudley gave up three runs on three hits over three innings. Frazee improved to 12-10.

     Nevis stayed alive with a 13-7 win over BHV in Thursday’s elimination game at Menahga. A seven-run second inning and five-run fourth inning sparked the Tigers to the win. Mastley went 3 for 5 with three RBI while Austin Becker and Gavin Becker both went 3 for 4. Byer and Courtland Chase had two hits each while Eddie Nedvicky, Stack, Byer and Mastley scored two runs apiece. Gavin Becker earned the win, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits in seven innings. Nevis finished with 14 hits. BHV, the No. 4 seed in the north, ended the season at 14-9.

     Nevis carried an 18-5 record into Tuesday’s elimination game against Brandon-Evansville at Fergus Falls. The winner of that game played the winner between Frazee and Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley in Tuesday’s other elimination game. New York Mills and Breckenridge entered Tuesday’s play as the only undefeated teams. The Section 6A final will be played Thursday at Fergus Falls.
