Tigers open season by shutting out Red Lake, Northome-Kelliher

     Bill Dent said pitching was going to be a strength of the Nevis baseball team this season.

     In the first two games, the pitching staff has been almost perfect.

     Brett Byer, Austin Becker and Gavin Hitchcock combined on a no-hitter with two walks and nine strikeouts as the Tigers opened the season with a 13-0 five-inning Northland Conference victory over Red Lake last Friday.

     Byer, Austin Becker and Gavin Becker followed with a two-hitter with four walks and eight strikeouts as Nevis posted a 12-0 conference win over Northome-Kelliher on Tuesday.

     A 10-run first inning sparked the Tigers past Red Lake. Eddie Neidviecky went 2 for 3 with three RBI and two stolen bases, Austin Becker went 2 for 2 with three runs and two RBI, Gavin Becker drove in two runs and Hitchcock went 2 for 2 with an RBI to lead Nevis’ nine-hit attack. Byer started and earned the win with six strikeouts over three innings.

     Neidviecky went 2 for 3 with two runs while Courtland Chase, Victor Mastley and Phil Moore scored two runs each to lead the Tigers past Northome-Kelliher. Neidviecky, Spencer Stack, Austin Becker and Hitchcock had an RBI each. Byer earned the win by allowing two hits and striking out five in three innings.
