Verndale eliminates Tigers from Section 5A playoffs

Jordyn Glenz scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in leading Verndale to a 70-57 victory over the Nevis girls basketball team in a Section 5A playoff game Thursday night at Verndale.

Shania Glenz added 17 points and Sarah Moenkedick scored 15 points as the Pirates improved to 23-3 with their ninth win in a row. Verndale, which defeated the Tigers 56-40 in the regular-season finale, entered the section tournament as the No. 2 seed in the north.

Hannah Bliss led the No. 7-seeded Tigers with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Megan Norby added 17 points and six rebounds while Jordyn Lucas had 11 points and two assists. Emma Bliss pulled down six rebounds and Diana Schuldt had two steals as Nevis ended the season with an 11-14 record.

“I couldn’t be any prouder of this group of girls,” said Nevis head coach Michael Lien, whose team trailed 25-21 at the half. “Less than a week ago we went into our halftime speech in the same locker room down 35-8. I told the girls before the game to leave everything on the floor and have no regrets in the effort department. Boy, did they listen. I’d say this was the hardest we’ve worked in any game this season.”

The Tigers opened the section tournament with a 66-53 win over No. 10 Northland on March 3 at Nevis.

Norby had 22 points and 10 rebounds while Hannah Bliss added 15 points and 17 rebounds. Angel Wolf also hit double figures with 12 points while Schuldt had five steals and four rebounds. Emma Bliss pulled down eight rebounds while Lucas had two assists as the Tigers prevailed despite making only 15 of 33 free throws.

Northland ended the season with a 6-18 record.
