Verndale defeats Nevis in regular-season finale

Sarah Moenkedick scored 21 points and Krista Dailey added 14 points in leading Verndale to a 56-40 win over the Tigers in the regular-season finale last Friday night.

The Pirates jumped out to a 35-8 halftime lead in improving to 22-3. Nevis made only 3 of 29 field goals in the first half.

Megan Norby’s 15 points, eight rebounds and two steals led the Tigers. Jordyn Lucas (8), Emma Bliss (7) and Hannah Bliss (6) combined for 21 points while Hannah Bliss led the way with 15 rebounds. Lucas had four steals and two assists and Emma Bliss had four rebounds as Nevis fell to 10-13.

“We were flat in the first half. It felt like a lid was on the basket. Credit Verndale for the intensity they showed in every department in the first half,” said Nevis head coach Mike Lien, whose team outscored Verndale 32-21 after the break. “The second half was a complete 360-degree change for us. We came out and played with fire in our eyes. I think we hit the point where everyone was sick of losing and getting outhustled that we finally decided to kick it up a notch. I thought our team defense in the second half was some of the best defense we’ve played all season. I told the girls after the game that this will probably be the happiest you’ll ever see me after a double-digit loss.”
