Panthers drop duals to DL, EGF, Crookston

  Detroit Lakes, East Grand Forks and Crookston defeated the Park Rapids boys tennis team at the Depot Courts.

     Detroit Lakes prevailed 4-3 in the Mid-State Conference finale Monday while East Grand Forks (5-2) and Crookston (7-0) prevailed in a battle of Section 8A rivals Tuesday.

     The three losses dropped Park Rapids to 0-11 in dual meets.

     Park Rapids received the No. 6 seed in Section 8A and will open the section tournament at No. 3 East Grand Forks Monday. No. 4 Detroit Lakes hosts No. 5 Wadena-Deer Creek/Perham in Monday’s other first-round match. No. 1 Thief River Falls and No. 2 Crookston received byes. The section semifinals and finals will be played Tuesday at Perham. The individual tournament will play first-round matches Tuesday with the finals Thursday at Perham.

Lakers edge Panthers

     The Panthers swept the three doubles matches, but were swept in the four singles matches as Detroit Lakes swept the season series.

     Chris Shaw and Calvin Bateman lost only two games at No. 1 doubles, Nick Lopez and Jeff Dickinson lost only one game at No. 2 doubles, and Jackson Kimball and Jaden Olson lost only one game at No. 3 doubles to lead the Panthers to the sweep in doubles.

     The Lakers, who defeated Park Rapids 6-1 earlier in the season, won all four singles matches in straight sets.

No. 1 singles: Carlos Espinosa, DL, over Josh Johnson 6-2, 6-1.

No. 2 singles: Caleb Howard, DL, over Iain Wallace 6-0, 6-1.

No. 3 singles: Chandler Hanks, DL, over Zach Tretbar 6-4, 6-2.

No. 4 singles: Austin Nelson, DL, over Alex Boyd 6-3, 6-0.

No. 1 doubles: Chris Shaw/Calvin Bateman, PR, over Brady Crawford/Dylan Bremseth 6-2, 6-0.

No. 2 doubles: Nick Lopez/Jeff Dickinson, PR, over Luke Eggebraaten/Colton Friesen 6-1, 6-0.

No. 3 doubles: Jackson Kimball/Jaden Olson, PR, over Korgen Halver/Dom Knopf 6-1, 6-0.

Panthers fall to section foes

     Crookston blanked the Panthers 7-0 and defeated EGF 5-2 at Tuesday’s triangular meet at the Depot Courts.

     Shaw and Bateman prevailed in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles while Dickinson and Lopez prevailed in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles to account for the Panthers’ two wins against EGF.

     Crookston won all seven matches against the Panthers in straight sets.
