Panthers open with two wins
Patience at the plate and aggressiveness on the bases led the Park Rapids baseball team to a pair of victories at Wheaton Saturday.
The Panthers combined 13 walks with seven stolen bases to open the season with a 15-0 five-inning victory over Wheaton before using 14 hits to spark a 10-7 win over Frazee.
In the win over Wheaton, Josh Severtson’s RBI single led to two runs in the first inning before five walks with two outs led to four runs in the second. A two-run single by David Dirks and RBI singles by Andy Waller, Zach Eystad, Drew Bade and Kyle Goplerud sparked a nine-run fourth inning that sealed the win.
Tyler McCollum gave up one hit over the first four innings for the win while Dirks went 3 for 4 to spark the Panthers’ nine-hit attack. Severtson stole three bases and scored four runs while Eystad scored three runs.
Eystad, Bade, Jordan McCollum, Brad Eischens and Dirks all had two hits in leading the Panthers past Frazee.
Severtson’s RBI single led to two runs in the third before RBI singles by Dirks, Eystad and Bade produced three runs in the fourth. Singles by Chris Goplerud, Eischens and Dirks set up a two-run single by Eystad during a three-run fifth before singles by Eischens, John Wiederin and Bade led to the final two runs in the seventh.
Kyle Goplerud allowed three hits and three runs over the first five innings for the win.
