Panthers finish key win over Cardinals

Charity Ridlon won three singles matches as the Park Rapids girls tennis team defeated Staples-Motley, New York Mills and Perham.

Christina Smith gave the Park Rapids girls tennis team a key Mid-State Conference and Section 8A victory over Staples-Motley Saturday at the Depot Courts.

Rain forced this dual meet to be suspended tied at 3-3 on Sept. 6. Julia Renner, Julia Smith and Charity Ridlon posted straight-set wins in singles to lead the Panthers. Christina Smith split sets and was tied 2-2 in the third set at No. 1 singles when the match was called.

Smith and Mikayla Wing finished their No. 1 singles match at the conclusion of the Mid-State Conference tournament Saturday with Smith prevailing 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

That win gave the Panthers a 5-1 record against conference opponents and a 9-3 overall record in dual meets.

No. 2 doubles: Brooke Wolhowe/Ann Kautto, S-M, over Lydia Schaum/ Heidi Schaum 6-0, 6-1.

No. 3 doubles: Linsey Johnson/ Christina Smith, S-M, over Jeni Simpson/Jill Simpson 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-0.

Panthers rout Perham, NYM

The Panthers posted two more wins against section opponents last week, defeating Perham 7-0 last Tuesday and New York Mills 7-0 on Thursday.

Against Perham, the Panthers lost only nine games in the seven matches as Julia Smith, Ridlon, Hope Johnson and Lydia Schaum coasted in singles while Christina Smith and Renner, Lindsey Girtz and Sarena Kinkel, and Jeni Simpson and Jill Simpson coasted in doubles.

The Panthers dropped only two games against New York Mills at the Depot Courts as Julia Smith, Ridlon and Johnson coasted in singles while Christina Smith and Renner, Kinkel and Girtz, and Lydia Schaum and Heidi Schaum coasted in doubles. Sam Boyd received a forfeit win at No. 4 singles.
