Dirks throws 2-hitter, Panthers blank Flyers

David Dirks threw a two-hitter as the Park Rapids baseball team closed out the regular season with a 10-0 five-inning win at Bagley Thursday.

The Panthers scored six runs in the third and four in the fourth to end this game early via the 10-run rule.

In the third, singles by Tyler McCollum and Zach Eystad, an RBI single by Sam Coborn, a three-run double by Drew Bade and an RBI single by Chris Goplerud gave the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

Singles by Ryan Peterson and Eystad, an error and an RBI triple by Cory Odland led to the final four runs in the fourth.

McCollum and Eystad both went 2 for 2 to pace Park Rapids' 10-hit attack. Dirks struck out four to improve to 4-1 this season.

The win gave the Panthers an 11-8-1 record and the No. 3 seed in the south for the Section 8AA tournament. Park Rapids will host No. 6 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (9-10) Thursday at 5. The Panthers defeated DGF 10-6 earlier this season.

No. 2 Fergus Falls (10-9) hosts No. 7 Pelican Rapids (3-13) Thursday with the winners of those games meeting in the second round at the higher seed Saturday at 4.

Perham (17-3) is the No. 1 seed and opens against No. 8 Breckenridge (2-15) while No. 4 Detroit Lakes (9-10) hosts No. 5 Hawley (10-5) in Thursday's first round.

Park Rapids will host the next round of the Section 8AA tournament on June 5.
