Panthers follow victory over Pequot Lakes with loss to EGF

Scoring two empty-net goals in the final minute sealed a Mid-State Conference win Thursday night while allowing two goals in the final two minutes cost the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team a key Section 8A victory Saturday afternoon.

Goals by Allie Bade and Jessica Gapinski in the final 46 seconds sealed the Panthers' 4-1 win at Pequot Lakes Thursday night.

The Panthers followed by playing near-perfect hockey for 49 minutes Saturday afternoon. However, East Grand Forks scored twice in the final 1:59 to rally for a 3-2 victory at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

The win over Pequot Lakes lifted the Panthers to 5-1 in conference play while the loss to the Green Wave dropped Park Rapids to 2-5 against section opponents. The Panthers are 9-9 overall.

Panthers hold off Patriots

A 29-14 advantage in shots on goal helped the Panthers defeat Pequot Lakes.

The Panthers used an 11-4 edge in shots to build a 2-0 lead after the first period. Hannah Williams scored on an assist from Gapinski at the 5:05 mark while Alex Pederson and Danika Aletto set up Lauren Naeve at the 10:07 mark.

After a scoreless second period, Pequot Lakes closed the gap to 2-1 on a goal by Alex Palm at the 7:55 mark of the third period. But the Panthers sealed the win when Gapinski and Williams assisted on an empty-net goal by Bade with 46 seconds to play and Naeve and Mady Vaudrin set up Gapinski on another empty-net goal with 14 seconds left.

Goalie Shania Johnson made 13 saves for the Panthers.

Pequot Lakes fell to 1-3 in the conference and 5-11-1 overall with the loss.

EGF rallies for win

Johnson's 31 saves helped the Panthers maintain a 2-1 lead against the state's No. 17-ranked Class A team with two minutes to play.

But East Grand Forks tied the game on Karly Nelson's goal with 1:59 remaining and scored the game-winner on Haley Mack's shorthanded goal with 37 seconds to play.

After skating through a scoreless first period, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead when Vaudrin set up Gapinski with a shorthanded goal just 12 seconds into the second period. Each team had 11 shots on goal in the second period.

Park Rapids skated off a penalty and took a 2-0 lead when Gapinski set up Pederson 2:43 into the third period. The Green Wave continued to apply pressure until Nelson and Mack completed the comeback. EGF held a 13-6 edge in shots in the final period.

The win lifted EGF to 5-4 against section opponents and 10-10-2 overall.
