Pirates avenge loss to Panthers with 9-2 victory

In the first meeting this season, the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team held Crookston scoreless in a 2-0 victory.

The Pirates had no problems scoring in the rematch Friday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena as Brianna Breiland, Amber Trostad and Natasha Skala scored two goals apiece in leading Crookston to a 9-2 victory.

Caitlin Wahouske and Trostad gave Crookston a 2-0 lead before Jessica Gapinski's goal at the 10:34 mark pulled the Panthers to within 2-1.

The Pirates then scored three times in a span of 2:04 to take control. Haylee Epema's goal 2:10 into the second period, Breiland's goal at the 3:59 mark and Skala's goal at the 4:14 mark gave Crookston a 5-1 lead.

Marietta Geist's goal 8 seconds into the third period and Breiland's 29th goal of the season at the 8:27 mark pushed the Pirates' advantage to 7-1.

Lauren Naeve set up Gapinski at the 10:20 mark before Skala's shorthanded goal at the 12:22 mark and Trostad's goal at the 13:56 mark concluded the scoring.

Goalie Shania Johnson finished with 24 saves as the Panthers fell to 2-4 against Section 8A teams and 7-8 overall. The win lifted Crookston to 2-4 against section opponents and 8-8 overall.
