Panthers defeat EGF, fall to TRF

Pins proved to be the difference as the Park Rapids wrestling team split dual meets against two Section 8AA opponents Tuesday night at the Century School gym.

Five pins and four forfeits led the Panthers to a 61-17 victory over East Grand Forks in the first match before Thief River Falls relied on three pins to spark a 37-27 win over the Panthers in the final match. Four pins helped TRF rally from a 17-0 deficit to defeat EGF 46-29 in the other match. The Prowlers improved to 6-0 against Minnesota teams and 8-3 overall while the Green Wave fell to 2-6 on the season.

In the victory over East Grand Forks, the Panthers won the final eight matches to overcome a 17-15 deficit.

Jared Sunram opened the dual with a 5-4 minor decision at 106 pounds. Sunram used reversals in the first and third periods to give the Panthers an early 3-0 lead.

After EGF won the next two matches, Ben Baumgartner's first-period pin at 126 and Christian Weiss-Borg's forfeit win at 132 gave Park Rapids a 15-11 advantage.

The Green Wave took a 17-15 lead before Park Rapids used four pins and a pair of forfeits down the stretch to pull away.

Justin Dravis' first-period pin at 145, Brock Fritze's forfeit win at 162 and Garrick Scudder's first-period pin at 160 gave the Panthers a 31-17 lead.

Forrest Drury followed with a third-period pin at 170. Drury used a takedown and nearfall to build a 5-0 lead after the first period before a nearfall made it 7-0 after the second period. A reversal set up his pin at the 4:55 mark.

After John Kyllonen received a forfeit win at 182, Cole Tretbar's 10-0 major decision at 195 gave the Panthers a 49-17 advantage. Tretbar won his match with a takedown and nearfall in the first period, and an escape, takedown and nearfall in the third period.

Kyle Ritter received a forfeit win at 220 before Brandon Ritter made his season debut with a first-period pin at heavyweight to end the match.

The Panthers were able to overcome an early deficit in their second match before Thief River Falls won three of the final four matches to claim the win.

Thief River Falls jumped out to an 18-6 lead behind a pair of forfeits in the first five matches.

Sunram prevailed 15-13 in overtime at 113 and Baumgartner posted a 4-1 minor decision at 126 to lead the Panthers in the early going. Sunram trailed 12-5 before a takedown closed the gap to 12-7 entering the final period. An escape, takedown and nearfall gave Sunram a 13-12 lead before an escape before the buzzer extended the match. Sunram prevailed with a takedown in overtime. Baumgartner used takedowns in the first and second periods for his win.

Park Rapids tied the match at 18-18 behind Dravis' first-period pin at 138 and Fritze's forfeit win at 145.

Scudder's 13-9 minor decision at 160 and Drury's 6-5 minor decision at 170 gave the Panthers a 24-21 edge. Scudder used a takedown and nearfall for a 5-2 lead after the first period and a reversal and nearfall for a 9-4 edge after the second period before sealing the win with a reversal and nearfall in the third period. Drury used takedowns in the first and second periods to build a 4-2 lead before a reversal in the third period sealed his win.

The Prowlers rallied with a major decision and two pins down the stretch. Brandon Ritter's takedown in overtime led to a 3-1 win at 220 as Park Rapids fell to 5-5 in dual meets.

Thief River Falls entered the meet rated No. 10 in the latest state Class AA poll. Holden Nelson (No. 7 at 145) and Craig Williams (No. 5 at 182) posted wins for the Prowlers.
