Hat tricks by Odland, Coborn spark 20-1 win over Wolverines

Hat tricks by Cory Odland and Sam Coborn led the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team to a 10-2 Mid-State Conference win over Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday night at Walker.

Coborn had two goals and two assists as the Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period. Frank Moren set up Coborn at the 4:06 mark before Coborn and Levi Erickson assisted on a goal by Benson Ringle at the 13:02 mark. The Panthers then scored three times in less than two minutes to build a 5-0 lead. Ian Johnson scored at the 14:52 mark on assists from Noah MacPherson and Odland before Erickson and Ringle set up Coborn at the 15:10 mark. Coborn set up Erickson at the 16:38 mark as the Panthers held a 15-5 edge in shots in the opening period.

Coborn assisted on a goal by Erickson at the 3:28 mark of the second period before Coborn completed his hat trick with a shorthanded goal at the 11:18 mark to give the Panthers a 7-0 advantage. After W-DC's Mitchell Swanson's power-play goal at the 14:15 mark, Odland scored with :05 remaining as the Panthers carried an 8-1 lead into the final period. The Panthers had a 14-9 advantage in shots in that period.

W-DC opened the third period on another goal by Swanson before Odland recorded his first varsity hat trick with goals at the 4:43 and 7:47 marks. MacPherson and Johnson assisted on Odland's second goal of the game as the Panthers finished with a 38-22 edge in shots.

Goalie Scott Smith earned the win by saving the first 11 shots of the game. Evan Wilson saved all three shots he faced before Cody Brumbaugh finished up in the nets.

The win lifted Park Rapids to 2-0 in the conference while W-DC fell to 0-2 in the conference and 0-5 overall.

Panthers skate past LOW

Ringle's two goals and Coborn's three assists led the Panthers to a 5-1 Section 8A win at Lake of the Woods Saturday night.

Erickson and Coborn assisted on both of Ringle's goals while Coborn set up Moren as the Panthers led 3-0 after two periods.

LOW's Dominic Krause scored early in the third period before the Panthers sealed the win on goals by Odland and Johnson. Odland and MacPherson assisted on Johnson's goal as the Panthers finished with a 44-23 advantage in shots.

Brumbaugh stopped 22 shots as the Panthers improved to 2-2 against section opponents and 3-2 overall.
