Panthers defeat Patriots in home debut, fall at International Falls

After battling through two scoreless periods, the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team scored two quick goals and a pair of empty-net goals in the third period to spark a 4-1 win over Pequot Lakes last Friday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Park Rapids goalie Shania Johnson made 15 saves in the first two periods to keep the game tied.

Jessica Gapinski's breakaway goal with 13:06 to play broke the scoreless tie before Ashley Thelen scored with 10:18 to play to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Danika Aletto assisted on Gapinski's goal while Julia Renner and Gapinski set up Thelen.

After the Patriots closed the gap to 2-1 on Megan Snyder's goal with 8:44 to play, Park Rapids sealed the win on empty-net goals by Renner at the 2:02 mark and Kendra Dresow with 1:42 remaining. Gapinski assisted on Renner's goal while Abby Fischer set up Dresow's goal.

Johnson finished with 25 saves as the Panthers held a 28-26 advantage in shots on goal.

Broncos shut out Panthers

Goalie Keanna Carlson stopped all 19 shots she faced in leading International Falls to a 2-0 win over the Panthers Tuesday night at International Falls.

The Broncos used a second-period goal by Alyssa Bergstrom and a third-period goal by Michelle McDonald to spark the win.

Johnson made 23 saves for the Panthers, who fell to 2-2 on the season. International Falls improved to 2-1.
